Definition of Penile Implants

Some men with chronic impotence (erectile dysfunction) consider having a penile implant. These implants are also known as penile prostheses.

Description of Penile Implants

Most cases of impotence stem from physiologic causes that alter the blood flow through the penis. Often this is due to nerve or blood vessel damage from diabetes, atherosclerosis, pelvic surgery, prostate surgery, alcohol, or medications. Other causes include psychological disorders, both temporary and chronic.

Penile implants, or penile prostheses, are one form of treatment for erectile dysfunction. Because implants require surgery and are irreversible, this is usually the last treatment option considered. However, patient satisfaction is generally high when the options have been carefully evaluated beforehand. Implants are placed directly into the paired corporal bodies (twin chambers) in the penis.
